Was there ever a more perfect number for dividing things into parts?
In a probably dead-end quest to find myself a short story to write, I’ve been thinking about story structure. These one-shot concept exploration “stories” are fun, but they aren’t really putting my narrative muscles to work. Note that improvisation is another skill entirely, so just weaving some things together on the spot doesn’t count either.
I think a three-part story sounds like a reachable goal. Something along the lines of “world established and conflict introduced”, “struggles against conflict spurring change/growth”, “overcoming conflict through lessons learned” seems fairly standard and broadly applicable. A lot of settings can contain narrative arcs that fit such a mold.
Guess that leaves me with a setting and arc to find. What are themes that might be fun to tackle?
