I really want to write a review for Humanity Has Declined, but I just don’t have that much to say about it.
One thing I can really praise it for though, is the atmosphere it manages to create. I’m honestly still not sure whether this is in spite or, or precisely because of its absurdity. Imagine a distant future in which the human population has rapidly declined in size. Only few still know how to upkeep of technological commodities. All others have reverted to what appears to be the middle-ages. A new race of highly intelligent, highly capable, highly unpredictable and highly child-like creatures is set to replace mankind: Fairies.
Everything about the show is cheery. It’s art style colorful, its gags generously sprinkled throughout all episodes. I might be imagining it, but I feel like there’s an undertone. It shines through most prominently when the Fairies casually mention themes like oppression or death (despite the cute little thing never being presented as a threat of any kind), but the entire far-future un-topia setting carries this sense of “we’re beyond saving” with it.
And I guess that’s the point, if the human population has shrunk as far as they make it sound. Still, it feels more sinister than you might imagine. Maybe that’s just my longing for such a hidden truth to the series at play though, I can easily imagine it being just another “pretty okay” comedy.
Interpretation of media man, that never stops being weird.
