The drive

And what a drive it was.

The US is huge. It took us a good eight hours to get from one big city to another. In that time, you can drive across the length of the Netherlands– twice! As someone from the Netherlands, that’s a huge distance. I can’t imagine how people from Luxembourg feel about other countries. Must be a big world out there.

But hey, even though the drive is long, the scenery is very good. The mountain ranges are so vast and beautifully colored that the occasional flat plains in between make for a nice, easier viewing experience. I still can’t get over how cool that look is when mountainsides get shaded a grayish white the further they are away. Makes me want to paint, even though I haven’t seriously painted in, well, ever.

On the other hand, traffic jams in the middle of flat-plains nowhere aren’t all that interesting…

It always amazes me to see a picture of Europe superimposed over the States. In a space as small as Texas, for instance, diverse cultures and languages sprang up once, in that time when most people didn’t travel very far in a lifetime let alone communicate with people far away.

There are no hills let alone mountains in my part of Texas, so I’m always enthralled by them on those rare occasions when I go somewhere with mountains.
