Truly the crown achievements of the twenty-first century.

I’m not even talking about genetically modified crops, that’s just really cool (though we should do more damage prevention when using them). The real hot stuff is in the snacks isle. Those cookies that come coated with chocolate, filled with all kinds of delicious creme, something you just wouldn’t be able to bake in your own kitchen. Or the kinds of absolutely ridiculous candy you can buy these days, with all manner of different little gimmicks.

Something I find especially cool though is the “designer salt” used for Lay’s potato chips. They went through the trouble of engineering a kind of salt that tastes saltier than their previous, “regular” condiment. This way they get to use less salt for each bag of chips while maintaining the same flavor. Of course this was touted as being motivated by health concerns, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this just saves them a bunch of money in the long run.

Absolutely insane though, the kind of hardcore engineering that gets done to improve or invent pleasure food.

    It is interesting what we can do these days. Saltier salt? The heck? But at the same time I am one of those people who is a little concerned about that kind of thing.

    Which is silly given all the processed food I eat. Bleh.

      I see no reason in worrying if you do not know the science behind it, and thus can’t reason why it would or wouldn’t be bad without going “but it isn’t natural”.
