Thunder

A distant roar, a rumbling closing in. Beautiful.

Thunder is arguably the coolest weather around. No other forecast will have you expecting fiery bolts of destruction from the heavens, so we already know it’s good at marketing itself. Instant death, you say? Surely that’s nothing to worry about. Just take in the view of a beautiful bolt of lightning, frantically searching its way to a grounded point for sweet, sweet release. Shockwaves going through air and ground, signaling all nearby weather events that the big boss is in town.

But the more introverted variants are also a sight to behold! Those clouds that just rumble on and on, daring only to strike themselves, never quite reaching down to the ground. The clouds light up from within, giving us a few rare glimpses of the silhouettes of the gods that inhabit them.

Nothing beats the atmosphere set by dark clouds, a chaotic wind, and a deep rumbling getting ever closer. The energy in the air at those moments is so noticeable, you can’t help but feel alive and perhaps just a little bit giddy. Oh if only that state of weather could last forever.

But then we’d never get to see the fireworks and dance in the rain, now would we?

I really love thunder. It’s some of the best shit around. The only problem I have with thunder these days is that the cats aren’t big fans of it but I do, and always will, love a good thunderstorm. I’ve been waiting weeks for the hot weather of summer to finally give way to a cracking storm but so far all we’ve had is some rain. Booooooo.

A few months ago, I had the windows open when we had rolling thunder. It went on and on until I finally had to go out on the porch to get the full effect. It was amazing, going on without stoop for 15 minutes, above the solid cloud layer.

    Fantastic.

Yes, those are the best! They’re pretty uncommon sadly, but when they happen I just grab a nice cold beer and enjoy the show.
