Office Wizard

Got home, had dinner, used and learned about Microsoft Word for four hours straight.

I mean god damn. I’ve used Word to write reports and junk for school for years now, and never did I bother to learn its capabilities. Well today I got fed up with the constant manual editing of all the things Word doesn’t do by default, so I decided to figure out how to get that done automagically. Styles are great, tables of contents are actually customizable and the rabbit hole of advanced use cases goes pretty deep!

And that’s the deal with most of the Office set, most notable Excel, too. They’re incredibly powerful tools if you know how to use them. Insane how big and potent softwares they are, I’d almost feel bad towards the developers for not using their programs to their fullest potential. But if I did, then it’d just be wizardry.

One thing they suffer from though (Word is a huge offender here) is that Microsoft has said “hey we’re going to save your things as .doc and .docx, but we’re only going to partially document that format of ours!” This means that third parties end up having to guess about the implementation and interpretation of the format, which is why your Word document looks different in every program you open it in. And that’s Real Fucking Bad for lots of reasons.

I’ve already vented elsewhere though, and my hands are falling off from all this magic I’ve been pulling off.

It looks like you’re trying to say nice things about Microsoft Word. Do you need Clippy to help you with that?

Seriously, though, Imkeep hearing good things about Word’s capabilities. I don’t need much in the way of capbilities beyond maybe it keeping the margins where I put them.
