Odd Reactions of the Bodily Kind.

As great as our bodies are at dealing with trouble, things could be way better. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice anything bad gets automagically taken care of without any conscious effort, but sometimes the system overdoes it a bit. Or worse, it reacts to something that should be perfectly harmless. Congratulations, you’re allergic! Welcome to the club, enjoy this product with trace amounts of nuts.

It’s peculiar how the immune system managed to pick things out like that. Don’t get me wrong, I’d much rather be overreactive than underresponsive(?). It sucks though when eating apples, something that’s beneficial for your system, gets all its alarm bells ringing and sends a whole bunch of swelling up your throat.

What with how cleanly and efficiently is sweeps up the real no-gooders you’d expect the body to also be able to deal with presumably simpler things, like mosquito bites. But we still get mad itches whenever we involuntarily share our blood. Guess that’s not something we evolved to counter though. And apparently people in mosquito-rich areas like the jungle are more or less immune to their saliva, making for much nicer co-existence.

If only we could gain immunity through exposure like that for everything.

The human body does have it’s limits. It’s kind of strange that our immune systems, as fantastic as they are, haven’t quite evolved out of attacking us for no good reason. Some of the worst diseases are auto-immune ones, where your body attacks itself, and there’s no reason for them.
