Never thought I’d have it, but it’s definitely present in me these days.

Not even sure if “competitive” is the right word for it. Probably. Thing is, I just want to get good at things. Recently picked up the Smash Bros game for the 3DS and I’ve been having a blast with it. By now I’ve already unlocked all characters and there’s only one stage I haven’t acquired yet. And guess what, I’m actually playing fairly competitive one-on-ones over the internet!

What’s more, I’m getting my ass all kinds of kicked. Most of the people who do netplay have been playing the game for much longer, and are generally just better at fighting games than me. (Read: better at video games.) Here I thought I was actually getting kind of decent, hah. Despite getting my buttocks handed to me though, I still have that “need to get better” drive. Probably so that I can get more enjoyment out of online play, make fights less one-sided, but also because it’ll mean I’ve improved as a player.

You won’t see me going to tournaments to watch or play, but I would definitely be able to hold my own against above-average players. The less casual ones, that is. I learned a bunch of new techniques, so I’m sort of getting there. It’s hard to apply newly learnt things in a high-pressure environment though, so it’s hard to integrate them into my playstyle.

But hey, I don’t want to get too good either, otherwise nobody’ll want to play against me anymore.
