So much software

Been busy with the recently acquired NAS server.

Having SSH access to it is mighty convenient (and expected), but the default shell is rather lacking in what tools and utilities it provides. So I took it upon myself to install some core pieces of software that make life easier and safer. Upon scrolling through all the available packages I had the sudden realization that, hot diggity damn, there’s so much software that’s already been written!

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, really. But if you take a moment to try and imagine the amount of man-hours, lines of code, bytes of binary files that have been created over the many, many years, then you’ll quickly realize it’s all beyond the scope of human imagination. (And then we aren’t even counting the stacks upon stacks of punch cards from way back yet!)

Now, a decently sized chunk of that software is still available (even in use) today. Not all the work has been in vain! It must be a great feeling to know a piece of software you wrote ten, twenty years ago, is still being used in some way. Right now I can only hope to one day contribute something relatively significant to the huge pool of software. Imagine making even the tiniest ripple, it’d be huge!

Software as a whole is fun to think about.

And in contrast, it must suck to spend hours writing a piece of software that no one uses and gets forgotten. But it’s really not any different than a novel, is it? Some get read and cherished for years, and some get shoved aside and ignored.
