A day of silence

I woke up today, and the first thing I thought was “let’s not say a single word today!”

Not exactly how it went down, but that’s the gist of it. I haven’t spoken a single word today (text communication doesn’t count), and nobody knows why… because I haven’t been able to tell them. I started the day by not saying anything during breakfast for the joke of it (the context was right for it, don’t worry) and then though “hey, let’s see if I can keep this up all day”.

So far so good, and everyone’s heading to bed already! They’ll expect some interesting explanation tomorrow, but all I’ll be able to offer is “just for the fun of it”. They did try to squeeze some speech out of me today, but to no avail, I didn’t budge. Responded with shrugs, nods and shakes all day. And it wasn’t even that hard! I wouldn’t exactly recommend giving this a shot, but it may be fun to try out once.

One conclusion I came to is that if you say nothing but still remain responsive for long enough, the people around you will eventually start communicating through fart noises. It also feels really unsatisfying to not be able to lay down all kinds of sick burns and other jokes. Mentioning fun ideas or making clear what flavor you prefer tends to be near impossible, too.

Tomorrow I shall speak again.

That sounds kinda fun. I’m not sure if I can do it, though. I mean, I can go without talking to my wife, but it’s really hard not to talk to the cat during the day while I’m working.

I did that once. Me and a friend saw how long we could go with me not talking and it lasted a while, but not a full day because it’s pretty hard to have a conversation without talking.
