My experience with all web hosts so far: “Cool! …a year or two later: Shit, I need more!”

I mean yeah, WebFaction is the tits when it comes to a lot of things. Their customer support is great, their prices lean, and they have an actually decent affiliate program for nice benefits. But they still put me on a shared server, which means I have to play nice with other people using the same machine for their website. All fine and dandy, until I start wanting a strong amount of customization, flexibility and power (not the “needs more cores” kind).

I spent an hour or two today looking into what web technologies are hot these days, what with the plans for reworking SSR2 and all. Turns out, I’m far behind the times! Plain old OOP-less PHP, deploying by hand, what a fossil I am. I haven’t done anything serious in the web world for quite some time (SSR2 was made with my ignorance-vision on) and a lot has changed. Or I just never learned about it to begin with.

Anyway, point being, I don’t have the appropriate permissions to mess with things on my server because there’s other people there too. And now that I’m finally learning more, I’m seeing how much easier it would be if I could just tinker for a bit, install new things in convenient ways, etc.

Maybe I’ll have to go looking for a VPS… but they’re all so pricey!

I want to say you need to pick a server and stay there, but if there is more you want to do then find one for you. Find out more about the world you’ve left behind and throw yourself back in to it.
