Cooking’s a great skill to have! You just have to get over that initial bump of “help I don’t know how to cook things”.

It’s a skill you can (should) use on a daily basis, has a low barrier of entry, is handy in many situations, and you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor! What’s not to love? For that reason I’m trying to do some more cooking, now that I have the chance, with the parents away on vacation and all. Only a couple days in and… so far, so good?

I’m mostly just going off recipes I find on the internet. Cooking Comically is a fun source (though I’m not sure if it’s still active, sadly), and Thug Kitchen has some great things as well, lots of nice juices.
Thing is, I’m not very experienced in the kitchen yet. I can follow the instructions of a recipe, sure, but I’m still unsure as to why things work. Why do I add these spices? Wouldn’t adding this be nice? (God no that tastes awful, never again.) I don’t have any culinary knowledge to go off, let alone instincts. My skills are sub-par as well. Frying, like in a frying pan? Nope, don’t ask me, I’ll burn that shit before you can tell me how badly I’m messing up.

Nonetheless I’ve managed to satisfy my appetite a bunch of times already, and occasionally it wasn’t even that bad! Them potato wedges man, so good. I really should be doing more with potato, it’s such a great, super versatile food. Boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew. Bake ’em, fry ’em, all things you can do!

If you got any great recipe sources, or specific things for me to try out, feel free to leave your suggestion in the comments!

I learned to cook shortly after moving out into the real world and never regretted it. Now I’m one of those guys that can make just about anything from scratch and doesn’t measure. I’m a big fan of Just search for anything you could ever want, and there’s usually a very easy to make recipe with a lot of great reviews.
