Oh boy oh boy, time to do trade! (previous)
The girl knew what he was getting at. Hand over the stone and they’d make sure she could continue onward. She mulled it over for quite some time, pacing back and forth. Andrea got irritated, was about to tell the girl to just say yes already when she did. ‘Wellkay, jussis once.’
She retrieved the gem from the inside of her robe and handed it over to Mitchell without making direct eye contact. Despite her upset expression, there was still a hint of mischievous joy emitting from her.
Mitchell kneeled down and accepted it with both hands. After a quick inspection he put it away and stood up again, only to quickly lower himself again. ‘Oh, by the way, what’s your name?’
This sudden personal question flustered the girl, but she managed a straightforward answer. ‘Mara.’
‘I’m Mitchell, pleasure doing business.’ He held out his hand, but Mara wasn’t sure what do to with it.
Andrea sighed. ‘Name’s Andrea, and I really want to get moving, so let’s get started.’
It was a bit of a tiring process and it didn’t go very fast either, considering how little the two workers had slept. Eventually though they had managed to dig out an opening just big enough for a normal-sized human to squeeze through.
An eerie wind was coming from the other side. ‘Ah, fuck, that stings!’ Andrea took a couple steps back when it hit her. She rubbed her hands together. Handling the rocks had scraped off bits of skin here and there, making them more sensitive to whatever made the air on the other side sting and burn.
Mara was eager to go through, but Mitchell stopped her. ‘Hang on.’ He peeked through the opening. Mostly darkness. Lighting it up with a chunk of brightstone revealed there was a sharp turn to the left, but nothing out of the ordinary. A gust of wind blew through once more and gently swept Mitchell’s face. Unlike the sharpness Andrea had reported, he felt a strong tingling. Not painful in the slightest, but a tad annoying. ‘Puzzling.’
Andrea had noticed he didn’t seem to mind it. ‘More like weird. Really fucking weird.’
The two turned their backs to Mara and discussed what steps to take. They tried to at least, but it was only a matter of seconds before their little friend was making their way through the opening already.
‘Hey, I told you to wait!’ Mitchell took her arm to keep her from wandering off. ‘It might be dangerous down there.’
‘Butsit feel nice, dunnit?’ There was not a spot of worry to be found on her face. She didn’t seem to mind the air there much, either.
Again, a sigh from Andrea. ‘Fine, fine, I’ll come along.’
I’ll leave you with this. Neat-o scene upcoming which I originally planned for later, but it works here and I accidentally wrote it in, so whatever. Be harsh. (next)
