So let’s see what this new design’s brought to the table.
But first, let me tell you that the domain still has not been changed. Turns out changing the DNS Zones over at my registrar doesn’t do shit, simply because the site isn’t using their NameServers, but those of my web host. Duh. I knew this, but somehow it didn’t come to mind as to why it wasn’t working. However, because the domain isn’t registered with my host, I can’t change the DNS Zones for it there. Yeah it’s all really crappy, and their support is hella slow, but we’ll get there eventually.
Anyway, back on topic, the new design. For starters, it looks real neat. There’s all kinds of fancy effects, taking advantage of the latest (well not all that latest anymore) CSS features. For example, go hover over the items in the sidebar. See how the text fades into and out of visibility? You can thanks CSS Transitions for that!
Click on the top sidebar item, which takes you to the latest post index (the homepage of the blog). See those “continue” links? Hover over them. Oh wow!
Load times have been drastically improved as well. With the old design, all the content of the tabs (the archive, the about page, their images, and so on) were loaded every time you visited a page on the blog. Now, we have separate archive and about pages, so way less content is being loaded each time! On top of that, mostly all the images you see, from the header to the sidebar, are SVG files. Not only are they really light-weight, but they also scale really well! Press ctrl-plus a few times. They grow and grow, but don’t lose any quality. Amazing, right?
Very special thanks goes out Daniel Bruce over at Entypo. He’s done a great job making these pictograms, and it’s really kind of him to release them under such an “easy-going” license. Show him some love!
Oh, and then there’s the random post feature! Not all that spectacular, but hit the shuffle icon on the left. It’ll take you to a random post on the blog. Y’all will probably be wanting a little how-to on that, don’t worry, it’s on the list already! Same goes for showing the archive widget on a single page only.
Last, but definitely not least, is that the slogans are back! Check the header. As usual, a random one is selected each time you load the page. There’s a bunch of new ones, too. At the time of writing, there’s 66 of ’em, but I add new ones every now and then, so keep checking the header occasionally!
Phew, my posts sure have been getting longer. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the changes, and I’ll see you guys tomorrow!
