A great example for the rest of the Blogosphere.
No, this is not a Neil Armstrong tribute. May the man rest in piece though. The icon is still there, but the man behind it will be sorely missed.
In any case, I stepped up my game today and removed Google Adsense from my blog. See, no more ads up there. They weren’t obtrusive, malicious, or any of that, but as my guilt over using them rose as much as my profits dropped.
Why did I put them up there in the first place? I got my own domain name and web hosting, and wanted to be able to pay off a little bit of those costs with money made from the blog. It worked for a while, but the profits dropped, and I stopped caring. And really, I felt kind of stupid having them there.
I am perfectly capable of sustaining myself, even with the added costs of hosting. Money plays no role in my blogging experience. I blog because I enjoy it and the people in the Blogosphere, so there is no need for the ads. Besides, it ads to load-time, and a shit-ton of web-tracking for those who haven’t opted out of that program.
Hereby I declare my ad-free policy: I shall only run ads on sites that cost a ridiculous amount to maintain, or when I will no longer be able to support the site or myself without showing ads to their visitors.
I strongly encourage every single Blogonaut reading this to follow this policy as well. (If you want to place the policy on your site, hit me up and I’ll write a better version.) If you don’t need it, don’t use it. Be happy, and enjoy the Blogosphere. ’tis a nice place, so why ruin it with ads?
Be the change, Blogonauts!
