Cave Story+

Hey all! Something along the lines of a game review today!

Cave Story+, a game I got with a Humble Bundle I bought once. Hadn’t started it up until recently, but boy oh boy is it fun!
It’s somewhat of a remake from the original Cave Story, a PC game created by a single guy and released late-2004. It’s got a graphics and sound overhaul, and a new level in it as well.

It’s a platform shooter game. You control a robotic soldier boy who suffers from memory loss: the war is long over. You are apparently located inside of an island that is floating in mid-air. As the plot unfolds you meet a plethora of characters, both friend and foe, and try to find a way to escape from the island.
From what I described, the plot may not sound like much, but it is really intriguing. It keeps you guessing as to what’s next.

The game mechanics are neat, but not extremely original. You start out with a simple gun, and as the story progresses you collect more weapons to fight with. An interesting element is the ability to level up weapons: when killed, enemies sometimes drop golden triangles. Pick these up, and your currently equipped weapon gains experience. Level 3 is the maximum, though when you yourself take damage, the weapon also suffers, and loses experience.

Level design is very well-done, but I’d much rather talk about the graphics. Even in the newer version Cave Story+ has kept the pixelated look and feel, and the soundtracks still sound very chiptune-y. It’s a matter of taste, but personally, I love it.

With the Steam Summer sale going on right now, you can get Cave Story+ for pretty cheap. It’s 75% off right now, but at the time of writing, that’ll only last two more hours, so be swift!

Happy playing!

It does actually sound quite alright. While weapons leveling up has been done before, these guys were doing it before everyone was if it’s remake of such an old game. Plus I think that weapons suffering when you do hasn’t really been done before.
