Best party in the history of top-notch graduation parties!

'sup y'all I'm back! Yesterday's post was a scheduled one. Got you all tricked there, didn't I?

We went to a party a couple of people threw, as a fun final get-together of our current year of students. Only ~15 showed up, bit it was incredible nonetheless. Arrived at ~9, music was already playing. (Hostess lives on the countryside, so no neighbours to tell you to keep it down!) Played table tennis for a bit, talked, etc. etc.

Really not looking forward to next year.

Those who read yesterday's post know that I'm a bit scared of next year, what with the whole going to a new school thing and whatnot.

It's true, I really quite am. I am in no way looking forward to the next year of school. Entirely new place with entirely new people. That's not a setting I very well thrive in. Some of you have said I'll be fine since I'm very sociable and all, but that's because I have great friends here. I have a feeling that making new ones isn't going to be the easiest of tasks.

But first we have an awesome summer holiday coming up, including three weeks of home-alone and a trip to Sweden (hi Sophia)! And of course, not to forget the many time I'll be hanging out with friends, having a great time. Might as well make these last few months count!

I think that may make the hit of "haha your friends are all over everywhere and you lost every-day contact" worse though. I mean sure, we'll be emailing, chatting, and coming over to each other's places often (or at least I plan to), but it's just not going to be the same.

Ranted about this way too much before as well, so I'll cut it off here. It's just... it's all so close now. It's all so real all of a sudden.

Where the fuck are my lemons I could totally go for a lemonade right now.

Graduate with a voice!

Graduation ceremony was today, and boy was it hot and sweaty, all those people crammed together!

As some of you may know I was going to give a short speech... and I did! I was one of the two brave young men who were daring enough to do one. Mine wasn't exactly long, but got many "aww"s and applause from the audience. Seriously guys, that certificate is cool and all, but your friends are worth a thousand times more!

I'm having so much fun again!

I've continued work on secretproject [Library Edition]. It's fun again!

Had the thing gathering dust for a while, even though I plan on having a fully functional version soon. I got... distracted by things that are not important at all. Yeah, that's me.
But now that I'm back on track, and finished another chore, I can focus on the fun side of it again!

Samsung Refrigerator

Hot damn guys, get this: Samsung makes home appliances.

This is probably old news to most of you, but the Samsung Refrigerator is an actual refrigerator. I found out about this yesterday, and my mind was blown by the number of home appliances they make. I always thought "Samsung Refrigerator" was a codename for some new mobile phone or something, hell if I knew!

Pokemon Conquest

I just played this game for a while, and it's... pretty cool.

For those of you why have no idea what Pokemon Conquest is all about, it's basically Final Fantasy Tactics meets Pokemon. You play as a Warlord, and can expand your army by recruiting Warriors into your team. Conquer other nations by defeating the Warlord and army of that nation. Other nations can also attack you, so be careful!

Results are in: life scores a 7

I sadly only got five entries to work with, but I'll take 'em nonetheless.

Yesterday I asked you all to rate your life on a scale of 1 to 10. The results came in, and on average the people who follow my blog (and actually comment) give life a pretty nice 7. That's pretty good, right? There was a really low one, a 4, but also a couple of high ones, highest being a 8.8.

2012-06-23

Rate your life

Okay, let's get a neat little social experiment going here.

I want you to rate your life, on a scale of one to ten, decimal allowed. Leave your answer in the comments. On top of that, I thought it might be useful if you add a few short comments about how it's been so far and the current state of affairs. If you want to, that is.

Bloggers come and bloggers go.

And for every generation that goes, another generation of Blogoheroes is born.

Mark recently had his first Blogoversary, and in a post about it he mentioned that he's seen a lot of blogs just die, whilst quite a few new ones keep popping up as well. And it's true, but we must also take into account the ones that rise from an apparent death.

2012-06-21

I'm gullible

It's true, I really quite am.

That's not to say I'm completely void of all reason and thinking, but I am generally quick to believe things, be it something you claim, or something I've read somewhere. But I guess that's also a good thing. You know, with open-mindedness being an important thing and all.

Ghost blowjobs

Yeah, I spent some time on Skype again.

But we'll have none of that today. In fact, I had a pretty decent idea on what to write in today's post, but then I forgot because I got distracted. Short attention span, ADD, you name it.

Icon fonts (also: gearing up for retina)

If you read yesterday's post about HiDPI screens, also knows as "retina displays", you may have seen the mention of icon fonts.

But before we dive into the greatness that is them, let me educate you on the topic of fonts. What exactly, is a font? Most of you will know it as a style to display text on a screen. If you dive into the workings of a font, however, there seems to be a lot more to them than just that.

2012-06-18

On retina displays and other bleeding edge tech

With Apple having recently introduced their new flagship, the Macbook Pro with a HiDPI "retina" display, and me possibly getting one of those badboys sometime in the next couple of months, I feel like this is something that needs to be discussed.

On tech forums there's been a lot of buzz about the good and bad of the new Macbook Pro's retina display. Some claim that images look blurry and fuzzy on the new display, due to them not being optimised for screens with such a high pixel density. Some have claimed it merely looks that way in comparison to the text and UI elements that do take advantage of the retina display, whilst others shook their heads in a disappointed fashion and removed the new laptops from their shopping cards.

Final Fantasy (Advent Children)

Okay this all is coming from a dude who hasn't ever really played any Final Fantasy game so bear with me.

I watched Final Fantasy: Advent Children at a friend's today. And while it was a really epic movie and all (but fuck the physics, the movie doesn't need any of that), I found it to be a bit hazy in hindsight. The storyline, that is.

Ranting on the educational system

Now that I've graduated, I think it's safe for me to do another rant on why the system in society is pretty damn stupid.

We're going with the educational system for today, because that's basically the foundation for a lot of things later on in your life. That's also the reason why it's a bit of a problem.

2012-06-15

So, what now?

As with the tons of free time, I'm now finding it weird that I've actually graduated.

No more pointless school. No more stuff I don't like at all and probably won't ever need. (In before basic education. Yeah I know.) It's weird, and odd, and all those kinds of feelings. Relieved, though, that I safely made it to the other side in one go without ever failing a year. Whoop de do!

2012-06-14

/not so casually graduates

Guys. Guys! Holy shit guys! This day. This very day! uwu

So yeah I got called sometime after 2 PM today. "MARK, THIS IS YOUR MENTOR SPEAKING" Well not really, but something along those lines. She congratulated me, because hot damn, I fuckin' graduated!
That's right. I'm leaving this dreaded place (and separating myself from my buddies old pals) and moving into the big bad adult world now!

Overgrowth

We covered Lugaru yesterday, so it's only fitting that we cover its younger, yet much stronger brother Overgrowth today.

Overgrowth is the sequel to Lugaru, and is currently still in its alpha stage. It features the same main character, but goes by a different storyline with a lot of new characters (amongst which a few playable ones), has an improved and expanded combat system with a new engine running under the hood, and has a whole lot better graphics (duh).

2012-06-12

Lugaru

In 2005, Wolfire Games released the hands-on-combat game Lugaru. Now, seven years later, I bring you word of it.

In Lugaru, you play as an anthropomorphic (human-like) rabbit with insane fighting skills named Turner. After everyone in his village was brutally murdered he sets out to take revenge on the supposed perpetrator. However, Turner soon finds out how corrupt the rabbit republic is, and learns that nearby wolves are posing a threat that could be devastating for the entire island!

Apple WWDC 2012 Keynote: highlights and opinions

I actually watched and sat through an entire Apple Keynote for the first time. And I honestly don't know what to think.

I'll just be going over some of the highlights and giving my opinions on them. I'm going to be especially focussed on the MBP (Macbook Pro) line, especially the NG MBP (Next Generation Macbook Pro), since I'm planning to buy a laptop out of those lines.

It started off with some statistics and thank you's for apps and their developers. Nothing grand or anything, but then we got to the interesting part fairly quickly.

2012-06-10

Coming soon! (Also Fang is a dick)

News, news, and me being a bit of a douche by now. Let me explain the latter first.

I'm so obsessed with writing a blog post every day, that I'm willing to put a friend on hold (as in, he's here right now, watching me type or some shit) to make sure I have this day's blog post up on time. Nah, it's cool. We're the best bros imaginable, so he doesn't really care, but I still find it a bit of a dick move. Ahwell, anything to keep you guys off of my back!

In other news, I'll be doing one or two posts about the games Lugaru and Overgrowth soon. You may have heard of them before (especially Overgrowth), but I'm going to fully cover them.
What inspired me? I still had Lugaru somewhere on my computer, and my friend asked what it was. After entering a valid serial (sorry Wolfire (developers), I just downloaded it to try it out, didn't like it that much, but didn't delete it either), we went and both played through the tutorial level.
Took a while, but we got the controls down, and kicked some ass pretty hard. It's an awesome game, really!

So yeah, expect more on that soon. Also I'll stick some more quality posts here and there. Controversial items, anyone interested? Give me a heads up! (Also suggestions?)

But in the mean time, see you next time!

European Soccer Championship

Kind of late to the party here, but who cares. THE NETHERLANDS LOST TO DENMARK WOOHOO!

Now now, don't give me that look. If you're here you should now I'm not nationalistic or patriotic in the slightest, and don't obsess over sports (also despise soccer). I find all the frivolous shit we pull, using this as an excuse, it just plain stupid and it annoys me to no end.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

We just finished watching it today it's just so good I can't even.

Also we (Bien and I) had a little feud over wether or not Roy's pimpstache looks good on him, or men in general. Pimstaches are cool, don't mess with 'em. (Though I can see where she's coming from with the "moustaches are gross" thing.)

2012-06-07

Rate of idea-flow < 1 idea/day

Throughout the two months of A to Z, I've been gathering up quite a few ideas for blog posts (and a surprisingly high percentage of those start the letter S), and I plan to post them someday.

However, the time is not yet ripe. Right now I can't be bothered sitting down and actually writing a proper good post on the subject. So eh, whadya do.
Besides, ideas for posts come a lot slower than they're being used up, so I should try and spread out the use a bit. If only I had an unlimited supply of good ideas foor quality posts. That way this could've been avoided.

(Customer) satisfaction

Listen up, this is important. If you're an employee, customer satisfaction (usually) brings you satisfaction.

Been doing a lot of emailing with customers lately, and even had a few Skype calls already. (Still a bit scary, but hey, I need the experience.) It's cool to see how some people start all unhappy about things, this and that needs improving, and so on, and then after I've patched everything up they're really grateful and thank me for the speedy service and whatnot.
And you know what? It feels good.

2012-06-05

It's stupid.

So many things are. But first the fun stuff.

Had a pretty decent day today. Half of it was spent doing chores around the house and solving problems that didn't even exist for my job. Yeah.
Luckily, the other half was spent at my best pal's house, playing guitar, poker, and all other kinds of things. Great times, as always.

2012-06-04

Nationalism

With the Europe Championships of football running wild again, I think this is a good time to discuss this topic.

It's gross, really. Now with the EC going on, everyone over here is suddenly all "YEAH NETHERLANDS ROCKS OTHER COUNTRIES ARE COCKS WOOHOO" again, and I just can't stand it. With every purchase of groceries worth more than ten Euros you get a free nationalistic thingamabob, entire streets have been covered in orange decorations, and everyone's suddenly very patriotic.
Please, hand me a bucket to puke in.

Zzz

Z is for snores. Produces when reading a post Fang didn't know any proper content for.

Today was sort of uneventful. Played a bit of guitar, did a bit of coding (damn, I really should find a better way to make my code less chaotic 'cause right now it can sometimes be hard to figure out whether something has already been sanitised or not and where I should be getting my variables from and oh dear :C ), and derped about in general.

And then at the end of the day, when I'm writing my blog post, I remember things that I could've done.
Even worse, they've been there as sticky notes at the top of my screen all day.
God I'm stupid sometimes.

Back on the topic of snores, I've been sleeping lengthy times lately. But hey, that's what comes with seas of time, right? The freedom to sleep in 'til 1PM and then go to bed at 2AM because you didn't feel like sleeping earlier on.

I really should do the thing where I mess with my sleep schedule so that I only need a 20-minute nap once every 4 hours. Yeah.

Years

It's okay we have a calendar system like we do, but it's a bit weird.

Why? Well, a year doesn't start with spring. It starts somewhere near mid-winter. I find it weird to start a new period while you're still in the middle of a sub-period. Now that I think about it, the whole days, weeks, months system is pretty weird. It uses odd numbers and whatnot. Irk.

XXX

Let's see how many hits that title lands me.

As I'm typing this I'm Skyping with Sophia and Lev, which is pretty awesome. Mark should've joined in, but he couldn't make it. Sadface.
It still feels weird talking English and I still think it sounds a bit weird, but eh, whatcha gonna do 'bout it? It makes for good practice anyway, so yeah.
